Being 'bad' at your craft

I’ve been thinking about something Grace Reiter said on her podcast while talking about her “Hunger Games but better” video. She mentioned how people often treat creative work as something you do if everything else works out, as if it’s a hobby you abandon the moment you’re faced with a “real” career.
My friends and I talk about this all the time. We’ll say things like, “If stable jobs or corporate paths didn’t exist, I’d be a musician,” or “I’d open a bakery,” or “I’d play soccer professionally.” For a long time, I felt this way about creative work, and more specifically, content. It’s something I’m passionate about, but not something that will guarantee a comfortable life.
But here’s what I keep coming back to: there are people who are bad at their jobs everywhere.
We watch movies all the time where an actor’s performance is objectively terrible, yet they still got the role, and they’re still getting paid millions. So why do we treat our own interests as something we’re not “qualified” to even try?
I see content go viral constantly and catch myself thinking, “I could probably make that.” And if I feel that way, why don’t I actually try?
If I’m going to spend my life being bad at something, I might as well be “bad” at something I enjoy. A lot of us avoid pursuing what we want because we’re afraid of failing, but you don’t need to be perfect to start. You don’t need permission. You just need to try.
If it’s something you love, you should take a shot at it.
But don’t be a bad doctor lol
